» Topic 2 - The Range, Scale and Importance of the leisure industry in the UK and Europe

Overview

Range
The UK and European leisure industry is extremely diverse. You should be aware of the variety of facilities within it, and the range of products and services it offers. As the industry is so diverse, you need to know about the main components that make up the UK and European leisure industry, and how they are inter-related, including:
• arts and entertainment
• sports and physical recreation
• heritage
• catering
• countryside recreation
• home based leisure
• education as a leisure activity
• shopping as a leisure pursuit (that connected with the leisure industry rather than normal household shopping).

You will need to study the UK and three other European Countries from the following list:

  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Italy
  • France
  • Ireland
  • Germany
  • Switzerland
  • Austria
  • Denmark

How will I be assessed?

Level 1 - provide a simplistic or limited outline of the range of the leisure industry. Europe is refered to in a general way

Level 2 - provide example of the range of the leisure industry. You attempt to compare the UK with the rest of Europe.

Level 3 - give a detailed range of examples to show the range of the leisure industry and make appropriate comparisons between the UK and other countries in Europe.

Level 4 - give a wide range of examples to show range of the leisure industry and consistently make comparisons between the UK and other countries in Europe.

Assignment Structure

  1. Write an introduction to this section. You may want to do this last.
  2. For each component:
  • Give a description of what it is
  • Give examples
  • For several of your examples provide background information about the example and facts and figures including participation rates / number of people employed etc.in the UK e.g. For Arts and Entertainment you could discuss theme parks and focus on Alton Towers.
  • You should then discuss the above for upto three European countries from Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Denmark.
